Preservation Long Island HQ & Exhibition Gallery

Preservation Long Island HQ & Exhibition Gallery sits quietly on Main Street, a cornerstone for those who crave a deeper sense of place. The atmosphere here is earnest and unvarnished, with an old-school humility that sidesteps the tourist gloss. Step inside and you’re met not by crowds but by the kind of genuine hospitality that signals you’ve stumbled into a local secret. Whether you catch the exhibitions in full swing or just swap stories with the staff over pamphlets about Long Island’s layered history, there’s always a current of enthusiasm—a contagious love for preservation and education. Locals see it as an anchor, a rallying point for regional pride, while visitors find themselves drawn into a community determined to keep its heritage alive. This isn’t just a gallery; it’s Long Island’s memory bank, curated by people who believe history should be lived, not just displayed. Expect substance over flash and conversations that linger long after you leave.

Main Street

Main Street

Main Street in Port Jefferson Station isn’t just a thoroughfare—it’s the pulse of daily life in this Long Island community. Early mornings, local shopkeepers sweep their stoops and exchange greetings with neighbors grabbing coffee, while the scent of fresh bagels mingles with sea air drifting up from the harbor. As the day unfolds, Main Street becomes a casual stage for everything from impromptu chats at corner delis to families browsing mom-and-pop storefronts that still carry generations-old names. Here, you’ll find diners serving hearty breakfasts beneath neon signs unchanged since the ‘60s, and cozy bakeries where regulars claim their favorite window seats. Main Street bridges old and new: local teens drift between pizza parlors and comic shops, while retirees linger on benches shaded by maples. The street isn’t built for spectacle—it’s built for community, quietly anchoring daily rituals and local celebrations. While outsiders may breeze through en route to Port Jefferson’s bustling harborfront, those who linger discover a lived-in rhythm—one that reflects the enduring heart of small-town Long Island.

400 Broadhollow Rd

Set along the commercial arteries of Melville, 400 Broadhollow Rd is less a destination than a waypoint—a node in the intricate web of Long Island’s business corridor. The vibe is corporate, with glass-fronted lobbies and steady streams of professionals weaving through manicured plazas and parking lots. Here, the rhythms are dictated by morning commutes and lunch breaks rather than weekend brunches or evening happy hours. Locals know this address as a marker—perhaps a headquarters, an office suite, or a conference center—rather than a neighborhood hub where community stories unfold over shared meals. Tourists rarely wander here unless business calls, but for those on the inside, this address pulses with deals made over takeaway coffee and quiet moments spent in sunlit atriums. It’s not about atmosphere in the cozy sense; it’s about function, efficiency, and the hum of commerce that ties Long Island’s working communities together.

Huntington

The Heckscher Museum of Art

Set in the tranquil heart of Heckscher Park, The Heckscher Museum of Art is a compact Beaux-Arts gem that feels both intimate and welcoming. Sunlight pours through tall windows, illuminating a rotating collection where local landscapes meet modernist experimentation. The vibe is relaxed—no hurried crowds, just the quiet buzz of conversation as neighbors and visitors linger in front of thought-provoking exhibits. Staff greet you with genuine warmth, eager to chat about the latest show or point out hands-on activities for kids. It’s the kind of place where Huntington families introduce their children to art, and seasoned culture-hounds stumble upon an unexpected favorite. Steps outside, the park’s pond and playground draw picnickers and ice cream seekers, blurring the line between museum visit and lazy Sunday outing. The Heckscher isn’t about blockbuster crowds or imposing galleries; it’s about community. Its exhibits often bridge local history and contemporary issues, weaving Huntington’s story into something bigger—a cultural anchor where old meets new.

East Hampton

Guild Hall

Guild Hall sprawls across Main Street like a cultural nerve center, humming with the pulse of East Hampton’s artistic legacy. Step inside and you’re greeted by high white walls, shifting art exhibits, and a theater that feels intimate without being cramped—where every seat is close enough to catch the actor’s glance. There’s a sense of ease here, whether you’re in town for the Hamptons Film Festival or ducking in for an avant-garde ballet on a Tuesday night. Locals treat Guild Hall as their living room, gathering for workshops, family-friendly art sessions, and silent discos that spill out onto the sidewalk. It’s equally welcoming to city escapees and year-rounders—a rare bridge between East End tradition and cosmopolitan flair. The building glows at night, drawing neighbors and visitors alike into its orbit for everything from Met opera simulcasts to hands-on crafting. This isn’t just a venue; it’s where generations cross paths and creativity gets passed down like family silver.

Town of Huntington

180 Little Neck Rd

Tucked along the winding, tree-lined Little Neck Road, this address hints at an old Long Island rhythm—quiet, residential, and deeply local. The setting is more about slow mornings with the sound of birds over Huntington Harbor than any commercial bustle. Here, life moves at a gentler pace; neighbors wave from porches and kids ride bikes down shaded lanes. The architecture leans toward classic Northeast charm: clapboard houses with broad lawns and weathered mailboxes. There’s no neon sign or bustling storefront—just the kind of place where you hear lawnmowers in summer and see holiday lights strung across hedges in winter. This is the heart of Centerport’s community, a point on the map that marks not just an address but a way of life rooted in family routines, seasonal traditions, and a quiet pride in local history. It’s a place best understood by walking its sidewalks at dusk or pausing to watch the sun set over the harbor—a gentle reminder that community is as much about shared space as it is shared stories.

370 New York Ave

Tucked into the pulse of Huntington, 370 New York Ave isn’t just an address—it’s woven into the daily rhythm of the community. The building sits at a crossroads where old-school charm meets small-town hustle, its brick façade quietly observing the swirl of local life. Step outside and you’ll catch the scent of fresh pastries from nearby bakeries, hear snippets of animated conversation spilling out from neighboring cafés, and see families pausing at crosswalks beneath leafy trees. There’s a certain understated pride here; locals know their corner spots and greet each other with nods that say, 'you belong.' While tourists breeze through seeking Long Island’s highlights, it’s these lived-in blocks that reveal true small-town character—where generations run errands together and every storefront has a story. At this exact stretch, Huntington’s downtown pulses with camaraderie and possibility—a place where community roots run deep and every step feels like part of a shared journey.

Westbury

Flagstar at Westbury Music Fair

Flagstar at Westbury Music Fair is a throwback to the golden age of live entertainment, where the stage itself spins beneath a dome of anticipation and every seat feels close to the action. The circular, raked bowl seating creates an intimacy that’s rare for a venue this size—there truly isn’t a bad view in the house. Nights here buzz with a cross-section of Long Island locals and city escapees; some come for nostalgia acts, others for top-shelf comedy or up-and-coming bands, but all share in the electric hum that fills the room once lights dim. The venue’s modern updates keep things comfortable, while touches like the cocktail lounge and surprisingly friendly staff set a relaxed pace before showtime. It's not without quirks: expect bottlenecks getting out and parking can test your patience, but regulars know to linger and let the rush fade. More than just a concert hall, it anchors Westbury as a gathering point—an old-school hub where generations connect over shared musical moments.

Paramount

Huntington

Paramount

Paramount pulses at the center of Huntington’s nightlife: a two-level concert hall with the feel of a downtown club transplanted to suburban Long Island. Enter beneath glowing marquees and you’re hit by a vibe that’s equal parts electric and intimate—balconies sweep overhead, bars anchor every level, and the main floor transforms from standing-room mosh to rows of seats for those who prefer comfort with their chorus. The sound system packs a punch, balanced by sharp lighting that frames both legendary headliners and up-and-coming acts. On any given night, you might catch a comedian riffing for locals or an indie band igniting nostalgia from the stage. For many, Paramount is more than just a venue—it’s where generations gather, neighbors run into each other at the bar, and fans from Queens to Montauk make the pilgrimage for big-name shows without crossing into Manhattan. Despite steep drink prices, it remains an anchor for Huntington’s cultural fabric: part big-city spectacle, part hometown haunt, always alive with possibility.

Fire Island National Seashore

Take the ferry from Patchogue or Sayville to visit this 'island with no roads." Fire Island has been a special place for a diversity of plants and animals and people for centuries. Today, its unspoiled beaches provide habitat for sensitive flora and fuana, and offer solitude and spiritual renewal to civilization-weary people. Fire Island National Seashore is an extraordinary place. It includes 26 miles of dynamic barrier island with high dunes, centuries-old maritime forests, glimpses of wildlife, and desolate beaches, far from the sounds and pressures of the city. Also part of the park, but located on main land Long Island, you may tour the home of one of Long Island's signers of the Declaration of Independance, explore New York State's only federally designated wilderness, and climb to the top of one of the tallest lighthouses in the United States to enjoy a spectacular view of Fire Island. Fire Island provides an opportunity to leave the car behind and enjoy miles of boardwalk and trails, public marinas, a rustic campground, lifeguarded beaches, and visitors centers and programs that help you learn more about the park's resources. State, county and town-owned public beaches provide additional recreational opportunities on Fire Island. Interspersed are 17 vibrant, diverse private communities, which had been established before the creation of the national seashore. There is no hard-surfaced road connecting the communities, so they are accessible mainly by ferry or private boat. Without paved roads and with limited traffic, the communities have retained much of their original charm and character. Some of these communities have provisions for guests and tourists, while others are strictly residential. A small number of year-round residents endure the hardships of life on an island to help protect and maintain these small communities, until the annual revival of activity with the arrival of summer. The lives of millions of people are enriched each year by visiting Fire Island National Seashore and the communities within its boundaries. The mission of the National Park Service is to preserve Fire Island's natural and cultural resources unimpaired for the benefit of future generations, while providing for the park's use and enjoyment by our generation. Enjoy Fire Island respectfully!

Fair Harbor Ferry Dock

A quieter and more family-friendly beach, Fair Harbor Beach is nestled between Saltaire and Dunewood communities. You’ll find this area to be more reserved than Cherry Grove beach and a nice getaway from the “busier” communities. There is a strip of beach on the bay side with lifeguards, along with a few shopping and eating locations, but the bigger Fair Harbor beach is on the ocean side. Both are great for swimming and sunbathing.

Barrett Beach Park

Centrally located on Fire Island between Fire Island Pines and Water Island, Barrett Beach Park is a boating paradise and currently only accessible by foot, private boat, or via the charter ferry service from Patchogue or Sayville. Visitors will have access to majestic waterside views and park ranger-led family programs covering topics ranging from shelling to safe boating practices. The Barrett Beach/Talisman area was once the “jewel” of Long Island. In 1998, Barrett Beach was donated to the Fire Island National Seashore by the town of Islip. After 40 years of being a recreation hot spot for tourists, the beach became worn down. The playground, concession stands, lifeguard posts, and maintenance areas were all closed down or completely destroyed. The National Seashore finally received funding in 2001 to restore the beach to its former glory. By 2003, the renovations were complete: the ferry service returned, picnic and playground areas were completely redone, and docking for private boating has been made available. There’s not much going on here at Barrett Beach so if it’s seclusion and strictly a beach that you want, this is the spot for you.

Bethpage State Park

Bethpage State Park

Bethpage State Park – “The People’s Country Club” – is the crown jewel of public golf on Long Island and one of the most popular golf facilities in America. It’s home to the famed Black Course, a difficult and highly regarded A.W. Tillinghast classic, which in 2025 will host the Ryder Cup for the first time. The Black has also hosted two U.S. Opens and a PGA Championship. While many players associate Bethpage golf with the Black Course and its often-photographed “Warning” sign, the park offers four other impressive 18-hole layouts. The Red Course has earned many accolades on its own and is consistently ranked among the best public courses in New York and on the East Coast. It opens with a long, uphill par-4 that is widely considered one of the best starting holes on Long Island. The Blue and Yellow courses play side by side on the western end of the park and traverse a series of deep valleys and rolling hills. Bethpage veterans will tell you that a combination of Blue’s front nine and Red’s back nine would give the Black Course a run for the toughest 18 on site. Though certainly not an easy course, the Yellow is the most forgiving layout of the Bethpage quintet. The Green is a shotmaker’s course that demands very accurate approaches. It’s also Bethpage’s original golf facility. When the park was created in the early 1930s, the existing Lenox Hills Golf Club was absorbed into the park and became the Green Course. Amenities at Bethpage include an irons-only driving range and a large pro shop, plus a bar and restaurant. Part of the Bethpage experience is the overnight wait for tee times on the Black Course. Some consider it a rite of passage – if you can handle the Black after a night in your car, give it a shot! (But remember, the Black Course is walking only – no carts.) The Black, Red and Green courses are open seasonally. Blue and Yellow remain open year-round as weather permits.

Silver Sands Motel & Beach Bungalows

Located in Greenport, Silver Sands Motel & Beach Bungalows is the North Fork’s most iconic boutique hotel. Since 1957, our neon sign has welcomed guests to 1,400 feet of private sandy beach facing Shelter Island on serene Peconic Bay. Here, you’ll find breathtaking views, high-end amenities, and luxurious accommodations in 20 Hotel Rooms and 10 cottages. For larger groups, families, or extended stays, our Beach Houses – offering three and four bedrooms – provide an ideal retreat. Recognized as a 2024 Condé Nast Traveler Readers’ Choice Award winner for the Mid-Atlantic region, Silver Sands Motel & Beach Bungalows offers an unparalleled guest experience in a setting rich with history and charm. The Food and Beverage program at Silver Sands is helmed by Executive Chef Finn O’Hara, formerly of Michelin-starred The Four Horsemen in Brooklyn. His approach to cuisine mirrors the property’s ethos – thoughtful, intentional, and deeply connected to its surroundings – delivering culinary experiences that feel both elevated and effortless. Celebrated as a cornerstone of Greenport's culinary scene, Nookies has earned a place on Condé Nast Traveler's 2024 list of the 'Best New Hotel Restaurants in the World.' In a warm, nostalgic ambiance that honors our classic diner roots, Nookies delights guests with scratch-made, thoughtfully crafted dishes. Daytime favorites include pillowy handmade biscuits and crispy hash browns served with house-smoked, sustainable fish. As evening falls, the space transforms into a cozy, vibrant dinner spot, showcasing inventive, chef-driven cuisine with a seasonally evolving menu that highlights the freshest local ingredients. Down by the water, beneath a century-old oak tree, Eddie’s pays tribute to one of Silver Sands’ beloved former owners - a passionate oyster farmer. The menu nods to a Mediterranean repertoire but with the unfussy vibe of the North Fork; think wood-fired Neapolitan pizza, hyper-local oysters that travel only 200 feet from the water to your table, masterful seafood creations, and a well-curated wine list. Eddie’s exemplifies simple, refined seaside dining at its best. This 1950s beachfront retreat has been meticulously rejuvenated by Alexander Perros, the creative director, proprietor, and developer of Silver Sands. From 2022 to 2023, the property underwent a 14-month renovation in collaboration with the acclaimed architecture firm Leroy Street Studio Architects and renowned landscape architect Edmund Hollander, who infused the grounds with a wild, un-Hamptons aesthetic. Rooted in its rich history, the rejuvenation preserves the cherished spirit of Silver Sands while thoughtfully reimagining it for today’s travelers. The result is a laid-back yet refined escape, where meandering native meadows, mid-century details, and thoughtful hospitality come together seamlessly.

LUNCH Lobster Roll Southampton

The Lobster Roll was purchased in 1965 by Frederick H. Terry Sr., and his Dad; Richard C. Terry Sr. when it was a tiny roadside clam shack on the Napeague stretch. The Lobster Roll Restaurant became affectionately known as "Lunch" (although it serves lunch and dinner) because locals and travelers associated the now "iconic" sign with the restaurant. In 1978, Andrea Anthony joined forces with Fred and three years later, Paul DeAngelis came on board. Nearly 4 decades later, Andrea and Paul (former restaurant management professors) maintain current ownership and management operations of this busy summer eatery. Though still a principal in the Amagansett location, Fred (after retiring as a College Professor) returned to his roots in Baiting Hollow, N. Y. Fred's several other endeavors include the operation of Gingerbread University and the authorship of several children's books. No rest for the weary! The Lobster Roll has transformed over the years, through several expansions, but remains the quintessential indoor/outdoor summer eatery; attracting locals, celebrities, day-trippers, and travelers from all over the globe!!! Prime: An American Kitchen & Bar

Dedicated to the expression of modern American cuisine, Prime is more than just a culinary adventure, it is a true experience. Guests can choose from an array of raw bar favorites, like blue point oysters, little neck clams, and lobster cocktail, along with Mizu Sushi, and steaks and chops like filet mignon and parmesan-crusted veal chop. The menu also includes a variety of surf & turf options, including striped bass, wellington, and pepper-crusted short rib for 2. For those with a sweet tooth, there are several dessert options, like New York style cheesecake, crème brûlée, and the crowd-favorite espresso martini – all served with complimentary water views, as both Prime locations are directly on the water with boat accessibility. Prime’s first location in Huntington, NY opened in 2006, and is designed to reflect the look of a classic boathouse along the Charles River. A custom glass wall in the center of the main dining space is an artistic balance to the shimmer of Huntington Harbor just outside its doors. Spend an afternoon in our wood lounge, complete with fireplace and leather couches, or venture out to the firepit on our intimate fantail, reminiscent of a boat’s bow. Expansive water views enjoyed from the Wave Bar or while dining on the covered and seasonally enclosed porch are a perfect backdrop when sipping from our extensive list of signature cocktails, pouring a bottle of wine from our 1,000-label wine list, or enjoying our modern American cuisine. Prime’s second location opened 10 years later in 2016 just across the Long Island Sound in Stamford, CT. An almost mirror image of our flagship, tempered glass walls allow a full view of the water from nearly any seat in the house and stay open when the weather allows. Guests can explore our illuminated glass wine room, visible from the both inside and outside the building, and with over 750 labels, the floor-to-ceiling enclosure has separate temperatures for white and red wines. In warmer weather, guests can sit outside with one of our signature cocktails watching the boats come in. Dinner is served on the deck or our outdoor cabana bar. Sunday Brunch is offered weekly (Huntington: 11:30am to 3pm; Stamford: 12pm to 3pm), with catering options also available.

Down by the water and perched under a century-old oak tree, Eddie’s is named after one of the beloved former owners, a passionate oyster farmer. The menu nods to a Mediterranean repertoire but with the unfussy vibe of the North Fork; think wood-fired Neapolitan pizza, hyper-local oysters, masterful seafood creations, and a well-curated wine list. Eddie’s exemplifies simple, refined seaside dining at its best. Relax on our Bocce courts or simply let the day drift away. Eddie’s is a sun-drenched sanctuary where the gentle bay breeze melts away all cares. Arriving by boat? Please anchor at our mooring field (anchoring directly in front of the motel or beach is not permitted).
